New Court Helps Veterans Reintegration in Yakima
More help is on the way to help local veterans through the creation of a special therapeutic court.
THE COURT HAS PARTNERED WITH WALLA WALLA
A post on the Yakima Police Department Facebook page says a memorandum of understanding was signed earlier this month between Jonathan Wainwright Veteran’s Center (Walla Walla), Yakima County Superior Court, and the City of Yakima regarding the potential implementation of a Veteran’s Therapeutic Court for Yakima County.
HEALING AND HONOR
The memorandum says the city is committed to honoring those who have honorably served our Country and understand that reintegration back into civilian life can be difficult for some after serving.

SO WHAT IS A THERAPEUTIC COURT?
A Veterans Therapeutic Court is designed specifically for veterans providing a structured alternative to jail for veterans involved in the criminal justice system. The court connects veterans with specialized support veterans need to talk about and address issues like mental health problems and substance abuse. The support also helps veterans avoid future legal problems and jail time. By completing the program officials say often times charges are then dismissed.
HONORING THOSE WHO PROTECTED FREEDOM
The Facebook page says having a therapeutic option for those who would benefit from restorative justice, reduces stress on the congested criminal justice system and restores the veteran to a stable place in our community.
The Yakima Police Department says they're grateful for the opportunity to partner with the organizations and "look forward to being a community that honors those who have protected freedom."
