Yakima, it’s almost time to change your clocks, and don’t worry, it's the good one where we get an extra hour of sleep! The return to standard time falls on Sunday, November 1; the earliest it's fallen since 2020!

Hours Of Daylight Changing

The clock change occurs at exactly 2:00 AM when clocks move back to 1:00 AM. While the additional hour of sleep feels really nice, some do not like the changes in daylight it brings.

Sunrises will change immediately from 7:42 AM to 6:44 AM, meanwhile sunsets will change from 5:47 PM to 4:46 PM! Whereas earlier sunrises help many start their day, many feel sluggish and exhausted when it's already dark upon leaving work!

History of Daylight Savings Time

The United States first adopted daylight savings time in 1918 to save fuel during World War l. The idea was that an extra hour of light in the evening during the summer would lead to people using less electricity

The measure was discontinued the next year due to unpopularity with farmers whose schedules were interrupted and public unrest over the biannual clock change. However, many municipalities and states aimed to keep it.

The measure came back in 1942 during World War ll,  albeit in a different form. Instead of changing clocks twice a year, Americans had their clocks changed once to keep evenings long all year long. When the war ended, the measure again was discontinued, but random states and municipalities continued to keep it.

The patchwork collection of different rules across the country became a burden as the country became interconnected. As time went on, evening daylight became more popular as people enjoyed having extra time for recreation and shopping after work. Businesses lobbied to keep it, as they could stay open later.

In 1966, Congress created the Uniform Time Act, which set DST as beginning on the last Sunday of April and ending on the last Sunday of October. States could also opt out of DST if they so wished. Over time, the beginning point stretched to the second Sunday of March and the end point to the first Sunday of November.
