Record Number of Tourists Heading to Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) — The state of Hawaii had a record-setting number of visitors in July with more than 816,000 travelers bringing in more than $1.4 billion in spending.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority says July was the busiest month on record. The state reported a 4 percent increase in spending and a 5.6 percent increase in the total number of visitors from the same month last year.

The bulk of the came from the U.S. mainland. The number of visitors from Japan grew 2.6 percent and those from Canada grew 9.5 percent.

Maui, the Big Island, Oahu and Kauai all saw increases in visitors.

For the year so far, arrivals have increased 4.2 percent.
