The Yakima City Council in November will hold a study session to consider lifting the city’s more than two-decade-old pit bull ban.

Pit Bull Owner Brooke Ellsworth says it is about time. She says bans simply do not work.

“I think they should look at owners and not the breed because it’s how they’re raised and trained.”

Mayor Micah Cawley says right now he is for keeping the ban in place.

“I am going to have to have some solid information that shows we have responsible owners to convince me to drop the ban.”

Ellsworth and other pit bull owners feel a breed specific ban is unfair when they say there are lots of pit bulls that are part of the family for many in the valley.

No date has been set yet for the November study session.
