
Record-Breaking Memorial Weekend Travel Expected in Yakima

For many, Memorial Day serves as the kickoff to the summer season, leading to millions throughout the United States traveling for weekend getaways.
THAT'S A LOT OF PEOPLE IN LINE FOR THE BATHROOM
As Americans gear up for the Memorial Day holiday, AAA officials say an estimated 45 million people plan to travel at least 50 miles from home between May 21 and 25. This figure marks a new record and is slightly higher than the travel numbers forecasted for 2025.

GAS PRICES ARE DOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN WEEKS
Of those travelers, about 39.1 million are expected to hit the roads by car, according to AAA. Drivers should prepare for higher fuel costs, as pump prices are currently at their highest levels since 2022. In Yakima, local gas prices are down after four weeks of steady increases. According to GasBuddy's survey of 91 stations, the average price of gasoline in Yakima has fallen by 3.0 cents per gallon in the past week, now averaging $5.40 per gallon.
LOOKING FOR THE LOWEST GAS PRICES IN YAKIMA?
For drivers looking for the lowest prices in the Yakima area the Sinclair/Ahtanum Fuel Stop on Goodman Road offers gas at $4.79 per gallon, while in the Yakima Valley, the Wolf Den in Wapato offers the cheapest at $4.65 per gallon.

The holiday weekend is also expected to see increased traffic congestion, especially on May 21 and 22 between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, as well as on the afternoon of May 25. Sunday is expected to be the lightest day for traffic during the holiday weekend. Along with road trips Americans are expected to fly to their destinations, representing about 8% of total travelers.
SPENDY GAS CHEAPER FLIGHTS
AAA officials say round-trip domestic flights are estimated to be about 6% cheaper compared to last year, encouraging more air travel during the holiday weekend. Travel by bus, train, and cruise is also projected to increase, reflecting a broad-based rise in holiday travel activity.
