Thousands of masks are being handed out in Yakima this week to encourage more people to wear a mask to slow the spread of COVID-19. Some 300,000 free masks are being made available through a variety of organizations, the city and city police department. 90,000 will be given away by the city of Yakima and you can get a free mask this Sunday at the Downtown Yakima Farmers Market. Yakima Police Officers also are giving away masks all you have to do is ask. City officials and officials from the Yakima Office of Emergency Management are also making masks available to local school districts as well as colleges and Perry Technical Institute. Masks have also been distributed to area food banks.
Health officials say the aim is to increase the number of people wearing masks estimated at 35% to upwards of 80%.
