VANCOUVER (AP) — A man seen driving while his dog was dragged by his vehicle has been found guilty of animal cruelty.

The Columbian reports David Kadow was taken into custody after he was sentenced in the May death of his 10-year-old dog Hailey.

Witnesses testified they saw a yelping dog dangling by a leash from a truck.

They yelled and honked in unsuccessful attempts to stop the vehicle.

A witness testified to seeing the driver carry the dog into a home.

Police obtained a search warrant and found the dog's body.

Kadow had pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license at the time.

Defense attorney Grant Cole said the dog's death was a tragic accident.

Kadow may be eligible to serve his jail sentence under work release.
