Lake Tapps Found to Have Toxic Algae; 10 Swimmers Sickened

TACOMA (AP) — Health officials say 10 people, including a toddler, have reported illnesses after swimming in Lake Tapps, where a toxic algae bloom has been discovered.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department is urging people to stay out of lake, which is about 35 miles south of Seattle.

Officials are working to determine whether the illnesses are related to the toxic algae.

Many people were still swimming at the lake on Thursday, despite signs warning people to avoid the water.

Officials say swallowing lake water or prolonged skin contact with algae may result in illness such as muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and nausea. Anyone who swallows water that may contain algae should seek immediate medical attention.
