Governor Jay Inslee was in the Yakima Valley Monday evening, at a community celebration honoring the National Teacher of the Year, Jeff Charbonneau.

Dozens of people turned out to Zillah High School for the event.

They heard from Charbonneau and several other speakers including Governor Inslee.

Inslee said he was very proud when he heard the Zillah High School science teacher had won the award, and hopes he can share his methods with other teachers across the state.

"His ability to engage students in science, technology, and engineering, and math is unsurpassed in the whole country. And we need to help teachers across the state of Washington have the ability to do just what Jeff has done at Zillah High School," Governor Inslee said.

Charbonneau will spend next year touring the world as teacher of the year, but says he does plan on returning to Zillah after that.

Governor Inslee also proclaimed May 13th as Jeff Charbonneau day in the state of Washington.
