Yakima Police say an 11-year-old Yakima girl was injured Saturday afternoon at West Valley Park. Police spokesman Mike Bastinelli says the girl and her friends were playing on logs near the creek in the park when the 11-year-old girl slipped on a log and fell on a 3 to 4 inch piece of wood. The wood pierced the girls chest and caused life threatening injuries. Her friends called 9-1-1 and the girl was rushed to a Yakima hospital. Bastinelli says the girl was then transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she's being treated. Police haven't released her name. He says had it not been for the quick action of the girls friends who called 911 and flagged down a police officer arriving in the area the girl may have died.
