The Washington Policy Center's annual dinner is coming up Thursday in Spokane and will feature one of Washington state's favorite sons as keynote speaker: former Secretary of Defense Gen. James "Mad Dog" Mattis.

A Tri-Cities native, General Mattis has recently written in the Wall Street Journal about some of his experiences within the Trump administration and he shared his concerns about what he calls America's growing tribalism.

From the Wall Street Journal:

"We are dividing into hostile tribes cheering against each other, fueled by emotion and a mutual disdain that jeopardizes our future, instead of rediscovering our common ground and finding solutions.

"All Americans need to recognize that our democracy is an experiment — and one that can be reversed. We all know that we’re better than our current politics. Tribalism must not be allowed to destroy our experiment."

The general is right. The country is divided and our overall greatness is in danger as a result. We are missing opportunities every day that we pursue each other and not progress.

How bad it could get is yet to be seen, but if all goes south, I want Mad Dog in my tribe!
