A 30 year old man shot 6 times by police after firing at the officers with an assault rifle on Wednesday night remains in critical condition at a Yakima hospital. Interim Yakima Police Chief Greg Copeland says a full investigation is now underway but he says all the initial reports show the officers were simply protecting themselves when Lance Nanamkin started blasting his AK 47 at police.

The county prosecutors office is now working closely with the Yakima Police Department. Copeland says Nanamkin fired about 18 rounds and the officers about 50 rounds, all in about 20 seconds. Officers were hit by flying windshield glass but uninjured. Authorities say Nanamkin is a known gang member with a criminal record that includes a manslaughter conviction.
