Work will take place only at night, July through September.

Drivers on Interstate 82 between Selah and Union Gap will enjoy smoother pavement in a few short months. Starting Monday night, July 8, crews will begin a project to repave I-82 at US 12 from the Twin Bridges east of Selah to the Valley Mall Boulevard interchange near Union Gap.

Crews will preserve this 5-mile section by removing the top layer of the roadway and repaving with new asphalt in both directions. In addition, crews will repave ramps at the Yakima Avenue / I-82 Interchange, and the US 12 / I-82 Interchange near North First Street.

During nighttime paving, drivers will be restricted to one lane in each direction from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., when fewer vehicles are on the road. Ramps near the Yakima Avenue and North First Street exits may close at times. Motorcyclists are encouraged to use extreme caution or use an alternate route as portions of the highway will have rough surfaces. The speed limit through the work zone will remain 60 mph.

I-82 between Selah and Union Gap carries an average of 45,000 vehicles per day.

Drivers can check the construction updates webpage for weekly traffic impacts. The $3.8 million preservation project is scheduled to be complete mid-September.
