If you plan on doing any cruising this weekend watch for Yakima Police. Yakima city officials say cruising is only allowed on specific days in the city. The Yakima City Council last year adopted an ordinance that allows cruising the second and third Saturdays in June, July, August, and September. Those days are designated in the ordinance as available for ‘open cruising.’  A news release says other than on those days, cruising is prohibited in Yakima.
City officials say last weekend multiple vehicles were driven up and down Yakima Avenue as people congregated on sidewalks and in parking lots along the street to watch. They say that action violated the city cruising ordinance. The city news release says The City’s cruising control ordinance says that a violation of the ordinance could result in a $100 fine. Police can also cite drivers for traffic violations and people for trespassing on private property, such as parking lots.
Permits are required for cruising events. No one has applied to the City for a cruising event permit for this year.
