‘Change Is Good’ Awards $20,000 Toward Kids’ Community-Improvement Ideas
Seven student-submitted ideas for community improvement enjoyed their day in the sun during Bob Hall Dealerships' first "Change is Good" awards ceremony Sunday at Sarg Hubbard Park.
The two-hour event included a performance from The Not-Its and the presentation of checks totaling $20,000 to help the kids' ideas. Here are the winning projects:
- $5,000 for Selah Cub Scout Pack 276's idea of building Selah Volunteer Park. The plan is to turn a vacant lot into a park for people with disabilities.
- $1,332.42 for East Valley and Cottonwood elementary schools' idea of a "buddy bench." The goal is to give new students and kids who've been bullied to have a place to go and meet new friends. (This one accounted for two of the winning projects.)
- $4,297.36 for Mr. Hunt's class at McKinley Elementary School to replace two sets of soccer goals that were stolen last year.
- $5,000 toward new playground equipment at Satus Elementary School.
- $700 to fix the basketball hoops and purchase new basketballs, soccer balls and footballs at Barge-Lincoln Elementary School.
- And $500 for Maris Barbee's suggestion: She asked a new bed for her friend, who's been having to sleep on the floor. Bob Hall Dealerships is paying for the bed -- and for a weekend getaway for Maris and her friend's families.
