The Yakima Farmers Market will take on a new look as a new operator takes over the market for the first time in nearly 20 years this year. The Downtown Association of Yakima has been granted a special event permit to operate the market from May until October. The association Executive Director Andrew Holt. "We are the fruit bowl of the west. We are a premier agriculture community and so we want a farmers market that reflects that."
Holt says they want to increase the number of vendors and get more local growers to sell their products. They're looking at offering beer and wine samples and getting more brewers and wine makers at the market. Holt say they're also looking for more consistent entertainment. They're in the process of hiring a manager for the market. The application deadline is Tuesday, March 27. Holt says they hope to open the market sometime in May. They're still working on a date. The market traditionally opens on Mothers Day.
