We are a third of the way through 2019.  Wow, time DOES fly!  Looking back through the years there have been a number of significant events that have happened on this 30th day of April in history for us baby boomers.

First of all our....our future and our nation was secured because of the actions of our state's namesake president George Washington. April 30th 1789, 230 years ago, George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States

We laughed and laughed to the cartoon violence and inappropriate behavior that today's kids couldn't handle with their snowflake, triggered, remote control clutching hands.  That's right, with a nasally "what's up Doc?" BUGS BUNNY burst onto the cartoon scene in 1938 in Warner Brothers' Porky's Hare Hunt.

A lot of baby boomer parents paid a heavy price for Adolf Hitler's ambition.  But in the end, the greatest generation rose up and put down the axis threat.  Hitler and Eva Braun, married the day before, committed suicide in a Berlin bunker on this day in 1945 as Russian forces closed in. Hitler was 56 and Braun was 33.

The Boomers own war wasn't even officially declared a "war" but it too was costly in lives and ultimately in faith in government.  Of the 2.7 million who served in Vietnam, nearly one out of every 10 Americans was a casualty.   58,148 were killed and 304,000 wounded.  On April 30, 1975, the South Vietnamese capital city Saigon fell to Communist forces, ending the Vietnam War.

"Beat It"  from Michael Jackson's Thriller album peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States on April 30th, 1983.  Boomers loved it, bought it and made it the best selling album of all-time.  Beat It received the 1984 Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Best Male Rock performance in addition to a pair of American Music Awards.

Finally the culture changed forever for old school boomers on April 30, 1997 when the character played by real-life lesbian Ellen Degeneres came out as a lesbian on her sitcom, Ellen

April 30th through history - and now you know.
