END OF 'DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL': The military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy banning gays from serving openly officially expired at midnight, nine months after President Obama signed the repeal of the ban after it was passed by Congress. That came after a review carried out by the military found that the change could be implemented without harming military readiness.
