A couple of weeks ago, we heard the news that John Lennon's 1962 J-160E Gibson acoustic guitar, which had been lost for 50 years, has now by found and will be going to auction.

In 1962, Lennon and George Harrison bought two J-160E Gibson acoustic guitars. According to Rolling Stone, John used his guitar to write some of the Beatles' early songs, including "She Loves You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Please, Please, Me" and "All My Loving."

During a 1963 Christmas show, however, the guitar turned up missing. John wasn't the first to have equipment stolen -- George and Paul also reported having guitars "nicked" over the year.

In John's case, though, the guitar eventually resurfaced. Now, more than 50 years later, John McCaw -- an amateur guitarist in San Diego -- is planning to put it up for auction.

But is it really his to sell?

I don't think so. In my opinion ( yes, I am a big Beatles fan ), I believe that the guitar should be returned to Julian Lennon, John's first son. My reasoning is that the guitar was either stolen or mistakenly taken. (You'd think, though, that if you found out you had taken the wrong guitar by mistake, you would return it to its proper owner). So even if McCaw paid for it, he has no legitimate claim to it, since it was rightfully John's. I believe that guitar should not go to auction and should go back to Julian.

At that time, Julian -- born in 1963 to John and his first wife, Cynthia -- was John's lone heir. John didn't marry Yoko until 1969, so I don't think she or Sean, John's second son (born in 1975 to him and Yoko) is entitled to the instrument. Plus I would really like Julian to have this guitar, because he's had to buy a lot of the things that he has to remember his father by. (No points there for Yoko. Sorry, Sean, no offense meant.)

I invite you to follow all of the links and read the story about this historic piece from the Beatles' early history and rock 'n' roll.

Juliens Auctions states that The Lennon J-160E is on display prior to the auction at The LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas, from June 13-29 for the opening of The GRAMMY Museum® and Fab Four Exhibits Ladies & Gentlemen...The Beatles Exhibition! It will then be displayed at the GRAMMY Museum® in Los Angeles from July 2-September 7, 2015 and at Julien's Auctions Beverly Hills from November 2-6, 2015.

So who do you think should get the guitar? Take our poll and tell us ...
