Military officials say noise from artillery and mortar training at the Yakima Training Center (YTC) is traveling farther than normal into the surrounding communities due to the recent cold temperatures and low cloud cover in the Yakima Valley.

Officials say there's nothing unusual about the type of training they're conducting at YTC -- it's just that the sound is penetrating deeper into surrounding communities. The amplified noise is unusual, but not unexpected, officials say.

Military units at YTC say more training is scheduled for the next several weeks. However, the weather is expected to improve over the next several days, which should reduce the noise.
