With a measles outbreak rippling across California and other states in the West, the Yakima School District is reassuring parents of the immunization requirement that bars kids from entering school without the proper immunizations.

District spokesperson Amy Neal says the district requires all kids to have proof of immunization including MMR, the mumps, measles and rubella vaccine. She says if they have no record, they cannot attend school.

We work with parents and the students to see what the problem is ... what the issue is so we can help them out. But it’s real important to not spread communicable diseases around our school system.

Neal says parents have 30 days to provide the district with immunization records or kids simply cannot attend classes. She says the goal is to protect other kids from the spread of diseases like the measles.

There are currently 102 cases of measles in 14 states including Washington state.
