France's ban on full face veils that are worn by some Muslim women went into effect today (April 11th), imposing fines of over $200 on anyone who wears one in public. The ban is the first of its kind in Europe. A Muslim property dealer is calling for Muslim women to engage in civil disobedience by wearing the veils, and is offering to help them pay the fine for doing so. There were 59 people arrested on Saturday at a banned protest over the veil ban. France has the largest Muslim community in Western Europe, about five million people, but fewer than 2,000 women in the country are believed to wear a full face veil.
