Two people are being held in the Yakima County jail Today after being arrested in the assault of Yakima Realtor Vern Holbrook. The 78-year-old remains in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. County Sheriff's Deputies say 38-year-old Luis Gomez-Monges and 23-year- old Adriana Mendez set up the Saturday meeting with Holbrook. Court documents say the couple used fake identities and a false story to get Holbrook to meet them at a house in the Tieton/Cowiche area. The woman told police she saw Gomez-Monges hit the Holbrook in the head but then says she left the room to wait in the car with her three children. The suspects took off, but Holbrook never returned to work. Deputies says they found the victim lying in a pool of blood with his throat slit. He was flown to Harborview for treatment. Both suspects are being held in the Yakima County Jail. Bail is set at $750, 000 dollars. Gomez-Monges faces a charge of attempted murder. Mendez is being held as an accomplice. A neighbor in the area where Holbrook was attacked, Donna Hill says "I just don't understand people, I don't understand how anybody could do that."
