Yakima Police and Fire officials are about to get some extra help in tough situations. Former Yakima City Council member Susan Whitman has just completed training at the Police and Fire Chaplains Academy in Burien.

She completed more than 50 hours of training so she can help citizens and police and fire officials in tough situations. Whitman starts working with local agencies this week assisting Chaplains that work for area police and fire departments throughout the Yakima area.

She says it is all about comforting people in a time of need. “If there is a death in the family, a tragedy we will be there to talk to them until family or other help arrives.” Whitman she was inspired to take the training after a Chaplin came to her house after the death of her son-in-law Kyle Eggers who died in 2004 while serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq.
