The City of Yakima is considering a recycling program.

Yakima City Manager Tony O'Rourke says a recent citizen survey found 88 percent of city residents would participate in a recycling program if it was at the right price of fewer than three dollars a month. So the city is testing a pilot program in January to see if it can be created at that price.

“We want to test that for about six months and learn from that and hopefully create a citywide program from that.”

O'Rourke says less than 10 percent of city residents are now involved in the Yakima Waste Systems recycling program.

O'Rourke says the monthly cost is the most important point and the reason why many in the city choose to trash their recyclables.
