As the years go on in the Yakima Valley, it just feels that spring and fall don't last as long as they used to.

When summer hits, it hits hard with all its might.

Yakima is no stranger to 100 degree days and the first one of the year is coming sooner than expected.

When is the first day of 100 degree temps in Yakima?

The Weather Channel is calling for Yakima to have temperatures at 100 degrees.

And it's happening this Sunday.

There's a pun in there somewhere about Sunday and 100 degrees but not sure it's needed at this time.

It will be warm-to-hot the days around it as well, but that Sunday will see triple digits on those bank reader boards that also tell the time.

Be prepared.

When is the first day of summer?

The first day of summer is Friday, June 20th.

Our 100 degree day is happening in spring. Honestly, I don't know how typical that is. I'm sure it's not uncommon but just seems odd.

Yakima usually has a week's worth of 100 degree days often in late July or even early August. It'll spike, it'll peak, it'll break records, then slowly come down to get us ready for fall.

Along with that dry, hot heat in the Yakima Valley we're always reminded of the safety as well.

  • Hydrate. Drink lots of water.
  • If outdoors, use sunscreen.
  • Prefer shade.
  • Be wary of those around you as well.
