I’ve mentioned in previous articles how I didn’t receive an allowance growing up. I collected aluminum cans for my spending money.

One of my father’s ‘side gigs’ was doing custodial work at his place of employment on Sundays. My brother and I would go along and help.

Every Sunday (unless we were staying with our grandparents) my brother and I would go and clean Talcott Music Store (currently The Little Soap Maker) in Yakima. My father would clean the bathrooms, and my brother and I would dust, sweep, and vacuum.

Even when I was too little to use a standard upright vacuum, my dad had me use a small handheld one and clean the stairs.

On the weekends that I wasn’t helping my dad (because I was staying with my grandparents), my grandfather usually had me working in the orchards.

That was a normal part of my childhood until I got my first real ‘W2 Form’ job at a fruit stand in Naches.
