Crack Sealing Work on 1st Street Monday Through Friday
Yakima city crews will be filling in cracks along a portion of 1st Street Monday, February 3 through Friday, February 7. The work will impact traffic all week. City officials say the "crack sealing" work will happen along the section of 1st Street between Pacific Avenue and Lincoln Avenue. Work on the project happens from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. A news release from the city says "traffic restrictions will be in place in the northbound lanes of 1st Street while the project is underway. Traffic will be restricted to one northbound lane at times.
Crack sealing is one of the most inexpensive forms of road maintenance and is an effective method of preventing water from penetrating the roadbed and causing further damage including, most notably, potholes. Cracks caused by fatigue, changes in temperature, regular traffic use, etc. are first cleaned using pressurized air. Cracks are then filled with an asphalt emulsion, thereby preserving not only the roadbed, but the pavement adjacent to the cracks."
