The Yakima City Council meets this week to discuss spending money on the downtown master plan and form some important retail and implementation committees.

Yakima Economic Development Manager Sean Hawkins says, “The council isn’t being asked to approve the entire plan and this isn’t a plan to put shovels in the ground. It’s just preparation work.”

Hawkins says the council will be asked to approve more than $150,000 for design work on the plaza and a retail plan. The council will also be asked to fund a parking study and to give money for the committees.

The council has spent months in meetings talking about the downtown master plan and the plaza. Hawkins says it is now time to truly put some plans into action.

The council will also hold a hearing on the 2014 budget and talk about how to fill the seat left vacant by outgoing councilwoman Sara Bristol who is leaving at the end of the year.

The Yakima City Council meets at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.
