The Yakima City Council expects to hear from pit bull dog owners when the council holds a study session on the city ban on pit bulls Tuesday.

Mayor Micah Cawley says the city is simply responding to a citizens group who wants the city to overturn the law. “We’ll take a look at it today and see if the council wants to overturn the ban or keep it in place.”

Many pit bull owners feel a breed specific ban is unfair when they say there are lots of pit bulls people call family members in Yakima.

The council will hold a study session on the pit bull ban at 10:00 a.m. at Yakima city hall.

The council today will also hold study sessions on a change in a transit route to south 96th avenue and a proposal by the Yakima Homeless Network to open cold weather shelters in the city by November 15.
