STANWOOD, Wash. (AP) — Unknowing drivers in Washington state may slow down just from the sight of a new zigzag line on Highway 9 near Stanwood. The Daily Herald reports the unique lines were painted on purpose to catch the attention of motorists and warn them that a Centennial Trail crossing is near. But will anyone know what the 200-foot-long markings in both directions mean, since it's a first for highways in the state? Transportation spokesman Mike Allende says they're hoping the markings in the middle of the road will wake drivers up. He said drivers should also notice other signs telling them to watch for bikers and pedestrians crossing the road. Allende said similar lines are used in Europe, as well as Virginia and Hawaii. Two spots on Highway 20 in Concrete will get the zigzags next.
