It's been the scene of many record-setting races, and on Tuesday a dedication ceremony was held at Zaepfel Stadium and Don Holder Track after a recently completed $3.5 million renovation

In 1973 the stadium was named after the Yakima School District's longtime coach and athletic director, John Zaepfel. His son John attended Tuesday's ceremony, calling his father a man of distinction.

"He knew the game. He knew how to handle people. He knew how to build teamwork and he knew how to win," Zaepfel said. "Those were the things that were great. He had over a .700 win percentage for 16 years in American Legion. Unbelievable"
The stadium wasn't ready in time for football season, but Tuesday district officials held a spring dedication ceremony for the upcoming athletic season. The newly renovated stadium will also host marching band competitions for both high schools in the Yakima School District.
