The Yakima Police Department will be sending a team of 8 officers to help keep the Republican National Convention safe in Cleveland this summer. Spokesman Mike Bastinelli says 6 officers a Sgt. and a Lt. will be working the convention set for July 18. He says they'll get specialized training that could help when they return home. "We might not have an event at that scale but we will have events that require security and this is a great training opportunity for our officers." The Yakima County Sheriff's office is expected to send at least two deputies as well. The trip is being funded through a federal grant specifically for security at the convention. Bastinelli says it's common when large events are happening that police departments ask for help from around the country.
