We’ve all said “My eyes! I’ll never be able to unsee that!”  Fill in the blank on what “that” is but the point is we’ve all seen and recall some things we wish we could forget.  Can we help ourselves to forget?  Science says yes!

Dartmouth College researchers gave test subjects a list of words to study while also being shown images of outdoor scenes. Afterward, scientists asked the participants to try to either remember the words on the list or try to forget them while they had their brains scanned.

The results showed that when people were asked to forget the words, they tried to push all thoughts related to the images they had been shown.

Researchers say the findings have the potential to benefit some people, such as those with post-traumatic stress disorder. (Fox)
