The cherry harvest in the Yakima Valley is just getting underway says BJ Thurlby President of the Northwest Cherry Growers and Washington State Fruit Commission. He says growers expect a crop of 18 to 20 million boxes of the juicy fruit when harvest is over. He says that's not a huge crop more what he calls moderate but he tells KIT News. "It means less tonnage for the growers but it means we'll have better fruit on the trees. We're going to have a strong demand curve from start to finish. So I think those things are important as well." Thurlby says while cherries have arrived at local stores those cherries are from California. He says the large Washington cherries should hit store shelves within the next several weeks.
