Yakima Schools Events Line Up

DISTRICT EMPLOYEES IN YVCC JAZZ PERFORMANCE TONIGHT  . . . Four Yakima School District employees have been taking a jazz performance class at YVCC this quarter and tonight is their final – a concert with their classmates at Kendall Hall!  The performance begins at 7 p.m. and is free to the public.  The four YSD employees include Lori Strosahl and Christine Lavik, Garfield Elementary; Alan Matson, Eisenhower High School; and Nancy Byers, Asst. Director for Special Education Services. Enjoy some great music and support your colleagues!!

GUEST MUSICIANS TO LEAD WORKSHOPS FOR IKE & WILSON STUDENTS . . . Eisenhower High School will host “Six Appeal,” a six-man acappella group, on Friday, March 9. The guest clinicians will lead music workshops during the day for both Wilson Middle School students and the Ike students.  They will also perform in a concert in the Ike Little Theatre at 7:30 that evening.  Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults.

DAVIS & IKE CHOIRS JOIN WITH YVC FOR CONCERT  . . . You’re invited to a great choir concert!  The Davis and Eisenhower high school choirs will be joining the YVCC choir students for a concert this Sunday, March 11, at 4 p.m. at The Seasons.  Admission is free – can’t beat that!

FRANKLIN MUSIC STUDENTS PRESENT CONCERT . . . The Franklin Middle School Jazz Ensemble will be sharing a concert with the YVCC Salsa Band in the Franklin Commons on Wednesday, March 14.  The concert begins at 7 p.m. and admission is free!

ALL-DISTRICT CHOIR FESTIVAL . . . There will be an All-District Choir Festival on Thursday, March 15, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Davis High School Auditorium. Choirs from Discovery Lab, Franklin, Lewis & Clark, Washington, Wilson, Davis and Eisenhower will be performing individually as well as in a large group.  Don’t miss it!

3^RD GRADERS ATTEND PERFORMANCE AT CAPITOL THEATRE . . . All third grade students in the Yakima School District will have the opportunity to attend a performance of “Junie B. Jones” by the Capitol Kids on Friday, March 16, beginning at noon at the Capitol Theatre.  The students have been reading the Junie B. Jones children’s series this school year and will get to see it “come to life.”

21^ST CENTURY PROGRAM PRESENTS ZUMBATHON . . . The Wilson Middle School and Eisenhower High School 21^st Century programs are joining forces with area Zumba fitness instructors for a United We Dance to Cure ALS Zumbathon charity event.  The event will be held on Saturday, March 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilson Middle School. Tickets are $10 and proceeds will benefit MDA’s Augie’s Quest, a non-profit research initiative dedicated to finding treatments and cures for ALS.  (Contact:  Sarah Pimentel, 573-2461 or pimentel.sarah@yakimaschools.org.)

BUCCANEER BAND RECEIVES WIAA SPIRIT AWARD . . . The Davis High School Buccaneer Basketball Band received the Spirit Award at the WIAA State Championships last weekend.  This award is given once per tournament to one pep band or one cheer squad out of 8 teams.  Mr. Jon Conrad, the band’s director, received the award on behalf of the band at center court after Davis’ win over Bellarmine Prep Friday evening.  Way to represent Yakima!

ROBERTSON FOURTH GRADER HOLDS YARD SALE, FOOD DRIVE . . . Annabelle Goertler, a fourth grader at Robertson Elementary School, doesn’t think people should go without food and wants to make a difference.  This weekend, March 9 through 11, Annabelle is holding a yard sale where people can buy items by donating nonperishable food.  The food will go to Northwest Harvest, a non-profit food distributor.  She is asking people to donate items to sell at the yard sale – as well as requesting people to come and buy!  To donate items, call Angel Goertler at 654-5995.  The Findery Floral Shop, at 620 South 48^th Avenue has donated space for the event.  The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Friday through Sunday.

DISTRICT RESULTS FROM DR. SEUSS READ-A-THON . . . Yakima School District students from 10 elementaries and 1 middle school* participated in “Read the Most From Coast to Coast,” on March 2, Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  They became part of an elite group – students from across the nation who broke the record for the number of AR quizzes taken in one day:  3,581,992.   The one-day quiz total for all YSD schools was 4,426 books read and quizzes taken!  This national reading event challenges students to shatter the national one-day record for Accelerated Reader (AR) quiz-taking - last year’s record was over 2 million!  Accelerated Reader, a reading management software program for K-12 schools, helps educators measure and improve reading comprehension levels.  Students read a book at the appropriate level and then take a quiz on a computer.  The quiz assesses general comprehension of the book just read.  AR scores the quiz, monitors results, generates reports, and provides a platform to manage individual reading practice. *Adams, Garfield, Hoover, M.L. King, Jr., McClure, McKinley, Nob Hill, Roosevelt, Ridgeview, and Whitney elementaries and Lewis & Clark Middle School.
