A turf war is developing in Edmonds where some parents are objecting to crumb rubber used in new artificial fields at and Edmunds High School. Parents are concerned the rubber causes cancer. Crumb rubber is used at the new Zaepfel stadium turf at Eisenhower High School says Jim Wright the Yakima School District Construction Principal. He says they addressed the same concerns before the new turf was installed and after researching the issue Wright says "We were confident the crumb rubber is harmless and does not lead to cases of cancer among athletes." In fact Wright says the crumb rubber is used on artificial turf throughout the Northwest. The same turf used at Zaepfel stadium is the same the Seattle Seahawks play on at Centurylink Field.
Some parents say are objecting to crumb rubber regardless of the research. As a result Edmonds School District officials say they're looking at alternatives to the crumb rubber for the new athletic fields.
