Yakima Police officers are protecting students in the Yakima School District. After Wednesday's shooting at a Florida high school Yakima Police Chief Dominic Rizzi wants to remind parents that armed Yakima Police resource officers are now at every middle and high school in the district. Rizzi says they play a variety of roles but one of the most important roles is protecting students and staff from an intruder. "They're also a connection with the faculty. And they help keep students on the right track."
Rizzi says since the officers spend every day with the kids they can spot kids that may be having problems and get them resources and help. Rizzi says many lives have been turned around because of police officers in schools in Yakima and across the country. But he says the number one role is to keep students and staff safe.
