Dropping crime rates and better communication with the public two highlights of the Yakima Police Department annual report for 2015 released Monday. Chief Dominic Rizzi says community outreach helped keep crime rates down and foster a better relationship between officers and the community and he says that resulted in more crimes being solved in 2015. "The community is tired of it and they're starting to take a more active role. They're stepping up and not tolerating criminal activity." The report reflects the impact that work has had in part one crimes, the most serious, homicide, rape, robbery and assault. The Chief says since 1985 there's been a drop in part one crimes from a high of 127 crimes per one thousand people in 1985 to 59 crimes per one thousand people in 2015. And the Chief is hoping for more success in the years to come as the department continues to work with the community and creates more opportunities like coffee with a cop and BBQ with a cop outreach programs.
The annual report for 2015 from the Yakima Police Department is available at city hall or the Yakima Police Department.
