The Yakima Police Department is hoping the community will step up and help purchase a new K-9 officer to replace a police dog lost last year in a car crash. Officer Jim Yates says the department needs four dogs to cover all the shifts, but only three are working now.

It's why the department is hoping to raise $14,000 for a new dog.

"With the loss of Havoc when we purchased him about a year and a half ago Hopunion in Yakima donated $16,000 and we were able to purchase all the equipment and the dog," Yates says.
The department already has all the needed gear -- police just need to replace the K-9. The $14,000 price would include purchasing and travel to get the dog from a California trainer.

The department is hoping for any donations from individuals and businesses. If you want to help, contact Officer Yates at 728-6449.
