Yakima Police say one officer was shot in the knee during a struggle with a suspect last night.

The officer's name hasn't been released but it's described as a minor wound. He was shot after he tackled a suspect in 300 block of South 7th Street.

Police officials say he was investigating a shots fired called when he found Antonio Cardenas walking in the area. Cardenas took off when the officer spotted him. The officer gave chase and tackled Cardenas. The two struggled and a gun Cardenas was carrying fired during the struggle striking the officer and Cardenas.

Both are suffering minor wounds, the officer to his knee and Cardenas in the hip. They were treated at a local hospital.

Cardenas, a convicted felon was arrested and is sitting in the county jail on an assault charge.
