The Yakima Police Department recognized some of its own on Tuesday during an awards ceremony at the Yakima Convention Center.

Sgt. Tim Bardwell and Officer Mark Mckinney received the medal of valor for their heroic efforts last February when they were involved in the rescue of 4 boys who fell through the ice at the Kiwanis Park pond.

Bardwell says when he arrived he took action immediately “I felt confident in my ability to jump out into the water and grab the child and bring him back in.” All 4 boys survived the incident. As a result of the situation the city is placing a large sign in the middle of the pond warning of danger when the pond is iced over.

Six other officers were acknowledged for their bravery and dedication to protecting the community in a variety of different situations during the ceremony. Two volunteer Chaplains were also commended for their work with Yakima Municipal jail inmates.
