The city of Yakima is working to make a safer, easier way for bicyclists to pedal around town.

City Manager Tony O'Rourke says the city is working with bicyclists to develop a series of bike lanes around Yakima.

We have a study going out that we want their input in developing a bicycle plan and secondly what can we do day to day to make it more pragmatic and safer for people to enjoy cycling in Yakima.

O'Rourke says the city simply is not a very bike friendly community. Not from the standpoint of drivers, but because many streets and roads are narrow, making it difficult for bicyclists to ride safely in the city.

O'Rourke says city officials hope to finish the study later this year and use it to help develop more bicycle-friendly roads in Yakima.
