Yakima Police officers are involved in high-speed chases every month. Today they're receiving some special training at a facility at Hanford.

Police spokesman Mike Bastinelli says about 50 officers are being trained today at the Hammer/Hanford Training Center in Richland. "The officers are getting some hands-on training for high-speed chases it's pretty intensive," he says. Bastinelli adds that the training happens every year and is designed to teach officers the latest defensive driving techniques that could save lives in the time of a real emergency.

The training facility is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy and also provides training for other emergency responders, including Yakima firefighters.
