Yakima is hoping to qualify as a Mainstreet Community. Businessman Joe Mann, with the Downtown Association of Yakima, says they'll be working on an application for the next month to qualify for funding help for the downtown area through B&O tax credits. So Mann says state and federal funding could both be used to improve the downtown area.

"For example facade changes. If we can strip off some of the facades that are on these buildings that were put in in the 60's and 70's and take them back to their original beauty of the 1930s and '40s. Improving parks. Getting use of second and third story spaces downtown."
The application for a Mainstreet designation will be submitted late next month. Mainstreet in a National organization that's operated by the National Historic Trust to assist in helping to renovate downtowns around America.
