This is fire prevention week in the State of Washington and the American Red Cross is helping to get the word out about the danger of kitchen fires.

Executive Director of the Yakima office of the American Red Cross Lisa Rhinehart says they help many families every year that are left homeless by fire and many of the fires have been caused by people being careless in the kitchen.

“On average we help about 70 families left homeless by fire every year here in the Yakima region. That’s above the national average.”

Rhinehart says the average number of families helped by individual chapters of the Red Cross every year is 49.

Donations to the Red Cross help with the disaster relief fund that helps local families recover.
