Yakima City officials have decided to not fight a Federal voting rights ruling and comply with the judges order to begin the remediation phase of the case.
Both the city of Yakima and the ACLU will now submit plans to a federal judge for changing Yakima's election system from a mixture of at large and district positions to specific voting districts throughout the city. The change is being ordered after a federal judge ruled last week against the city in a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union which contends the city election system didn't allow Latinos to have a voice in local politics. The ACLU wants to see the city adopt an all-district voting system for all seven of the Yakima City council members.
