The Yakima City Council met in executive session Friday afternoon to talk about a city response to the mitigation plan set forth by federal Judge Rice in the city’s lawsuit with the ACLU.

The Judge ruled that Yakima’s system of election be changed from at large voting to district voting and that all seven council members stand for reelection this year.

The city’s response was:  “We have discussed the issues with our legal counsel in executive session today. At this time there will be no decision on what further steps may be taken.  Any decision by the Council will be discussed and voted on in the future at a public City Council meeting.

There are concerns about the Court’s implementation of its Order, which would have the effect of ending the terms of publicly elected council members two years prior to the expiration of their terms.  How Council members are elected is an important issue for the citizens of Yakima, and we take the Courts decision and this issue very seriously.”
