After hearing from both sides on a proposed aquatic center during a Tuesday study session, the Yakima City Council took the plunge, voting to partner with the Yakima YMCA to build the $9 million center at Chesterly Park on 40th Avenue.

"I think this and the SOZO Sports Park are truly two things the council has done for the children," City Councilman Tom Dittmar said after the City Hall vote.

Council members also agreed to further study the possibility of building a pool on the east side of the city in addition to the new aquatic center.
Yakima's share of the Chesterly Park center will be $4.5 million. The rest of the funding will come from the YMCA.

The council's vote was 6-1 with Councilman Rick Ensey casting the only dissenting vote.
