The Yakima City Council has decided to ask a federal judge to reconsider his decision in a federal voting rights case that could force the city to redraw its voting districts.

The council voted 6-0 Tuesday for the reconsideration that gives the city another 30 days to file an appeal if the request is granted. City Council member Rick Ensey was not at Tuesday's meeting.

The motion to reconsider must be considered by federal Judge Thomas Rice, who of course could deny the request.

The council also voted to file what's called an opposition brief. The brief is in opposition to an ACLU claim for $2.8 million in legal fees that it wants the city to pay to cover the original suit. City officials believe that's too much money. The ACLU has seven days to respond to the brief.
